2004 Swim Season

Another year has flown past, and it's time to start thinking about swim season again! Most importantly, it is critical that you return the pool use form immediately. Some homeowners still have not mailed the forms in and risk being turned away at the gate when they show up at the pool on that first hot day. If you have misplaced the form, call the office to get a copy.

Rules-Full pool rules are available at the Clubhouse. Meanwhile, please note that any child not potty trained must wear a non-disposable swim diaper.

Pool Parties-Members need to fill out a pool party form if bringing in more than 10 guests on any given day. A maximum of 50 guests is allowed for a pool party.

Sidewalks in Disrepair-A Report from the LPHOA Architectural Committee

Strolling through the neighborhood has become quite challenging due to the increasing number of sidewalk sections that have been pushed up and cracked by ever expanding tree roots. Moms are seen pushing strollers down the middle of the street to avoid the hazards.

Homeowners can contact the City of San Jose Sidewalk Maintenance department to initiate repairs and obtain more information. The city will inspect the sidewalk, and send a letter to the homeowner advising of the repair cost.

Repairs that involve cement replacement and tree root planing are estimated to cost approximately $8.00 per square foot or about $36.00 per linear foot (sidewalks are about 4.5 feet wide). Homeowners can select their own contractor to make the repair, or the city will subcontract the repair and bill the homeowner. If the repair is minor and only requires grinding, the city will do that for free.

Homeowners can be reimbursed for the cost through a sidewalk grant program if the home is not a rental and if funding is available.

Call 277-2572 to initiate an inspection, or to obtain more information and the status of program funding. Please see the information from the City of San Jose Department of Transportation web site that is attached to this issue of the Que Paso.

Spaghetti Dinner

Those of you who didn't make it to the Clubhouse on the evening of March 27th missed out on a terrific LPHOA event. Our Spaghetti Dinner was a big success, with 95 people in attendance. Even the familiar Clubhouse looked special with all of the red and white checkered tablecloths and flickering candles. We all enjoyed conversation with old friends and meeting new neighbors.

Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 453 who rolled the silverware in napkins and tied them with colorful ribbons. Thank you to those who brought desserts to share. Our thanks go out, too, to Barbara Allen, David Faulstich, Sal LaRosa, Linda and Jim Owens, and Lynne and Jerry Steele, who assisted with set up, serving and clean up.

Special thanks are due Sharon LaRosa and Janice Faulstich for all their hard work in the planning and implementing of a pleasant evening for family and friends.

Spring Tennis Camp

Spring Tennis Camp under Coach Don Johnson continues. All school-age children are welcome to come out to the Los Paseos Park tennis courts and join in the fun. Award-winning Coach Johnson has been teaching tennis here for over 25 years, and he offers "lots of tennis for less money!"

Curves Fitness for Women

A number of women in the Los Paseos community have checked out the new Curves location in the Nob Hill shopping center. The owners, Michelle and Rob Farley, use all sorts of clever ideas to help make three thirty minute sessions a week a fun way to fitness. They are pleased to extend a special offer to Los Paseos Members and Associate Members. When you come in, let them know that you're a member or associate, and the normal $149.00 initiation fee will be reduced by 50% to only $75.00!

Community Safety

There continue to be mail thefts in our area, as well as packages stolen from porches. If your mailbox is out by the curb, the Mail Carrier advises that you get a lock for it. Do not leave mail to be picked up in your box.

Call the police if you see or hear anything suspicious. Call if an unknown person or persons are loitering on your block.

Kelly-Moore Paint Discount

Just in time for spring cleaning and home fix-up, the Los Paseos Board of Directors has arranged for a special discount for Association Members with the Kelly-Moore Paint Company. The discount is available only on cash transactions. Homeowners and Associate Members need only tell the K-M employee that they are part of the Los Paseos Cash Account. The more the account is used, the better negotiating point the board will have in the future, so be sure to think "Kelly-Moore" when you decide to paint indoors or out.

House and Garden Maintenance

Garbage, recycling, and yard debris carts must be stored out of sight, in side or back yards until the day before their pick-up day. Receptacles are to be removed from the street and front of your house by the next day after pick-up.

No trash receptacles are to be stored in front yards or driveways!

If you need to dispose of any large items, call Recycle-Plus. They will pick up any three large items for $19.00. Contact them at 277-2700.

If you have old paint, lawn chemicals or similar items to discard, you may call 299-7300 to make an appointment to drop off hazardous wastes. The usual drop-off location is on South 10th Street. You will be given the exact location when you call. There is no charge for this service.

If You Plan to Remodel or Landscape…

If you're planning to make any major changes to your home or property, you will need to complete a project form for the Architectural Committee of the Los Paseos Homeowners Association. Call Sharon LaRosa at the Clubhouse to get a form. The City of San Jose also requires that you provide this documentation in accordance with the CC&Rs to obtain a building permit.

Clubhouse Rentals

Consider using the Los Paseos Clubhouse for your spring and summer events. It's perfect for graduation celebrations, birthday and anniversary parties, family reunions, weddings, and showers, too. The location is convenient with plenty of parking. In addition, it's inexpensive, and well-equipped for your event. Use of the kitchen is included, and there are folding chairs and tables available, as well as barbecue facilities. Call Sharon LaRosa at the office for available dates and cost.
