Calpine Benefiting From California Energy Crisis, Official Says
By Daniel Taub

San Jose, California, Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Calpine Corp., a California power producer, has benefited from the state's energy crisis by locking in ``very favorable margins'' on long-term electricity sales, Senior Vice President James Macias said.

The long-term contracts have an average ``spark spread,'' or the difference between revenue and the cost of fuel to generate the electricity, of $26.50 a megawatt-hour, Macias said.

The CEC has a web page http://www.energy.ca.gov/electricity/wepr that contains reports on the costs of electricity and how much profit a generator could make in the California market. Calpine's $26.50 corresponds to an annual $198/Kw/Yr and the CEC claims that $80/Kw/Yr provides a reasonable return on investment after cost of fuel and overhead are taken out.

This means that for the 10 year contracts Calpine have signed with the state MEC will make and extra $72 Million per year. Makes that $5M for noise prevention look small. Makes moving the whole thing into the unihabited eastern part of the county look small too!
