Subj: Power plant From: raym@telus.net (Raymond Moss) Recently after 7 months of a citizens stewardship co-alition taking a
public stance against the re-zoning of city land for a gas power plant
in the middle of Port Alberni BC Canada we were able to convince city
council to vote against rezoning there own property. We have an
inversion layer here and many residents spoke out against the plan with
only a few in favor of. There were many things that game out in the
public hearings such as one spoke of an article in a Electrical industry
magazine that discussed Legionaire's disease can accumulate in the
cooling towers of one of these plants because of the condensing steam
unless they are cleaned several times a day .The company involved was
Calpine in partnership with our government owned BC Hydro. We were very
public and collected petitions and wrote lots of letters to every
goverment official we could think of .We were and are committed to
stopping having things like this crammed down our throats. These
companies think they can do anything these days. They are relying on our
apathy. Good luck. |
