Subj: Diesel Backup generators near Great Oaks
From: brilor@att.net (Brian O'Neill)

Hi -
My name is Brian O'Neill.
I am a board member of Silverleaf Neighborhood Association (www.slna.org)
We got this message below from one of our community members.
Do any of you folks know about this? I'm not sure if we should be concerned or not.
Let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks.

"The reason for contacting you is to make you aware of the Equinix project and their plan to install sixteen 2 megawatt diesel generators as a backup power source. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District testified in the Metcalf case that such generators, even for testing can pose a health risk. The Equinix project will be located between highway 85 and Monterey Highway off Great Oaks."

"The City of San Jose Planning Commission is voting on this project tonight and the Council will vote on June 4th. When US Dataport in North San Jose proposed installing a large bank of diesel generators, public outcry forced the City to require a much cleaner natural gas solution. I have contacted the planning department and found staff for some unknown reason has no problem with diesel generators in the Equinix project. From my limited perspective, there appears to be no consistent policy in the City to address backup power sources."

Information about the project can be found at
